Kisii University VC urges First-Years to shun promiscuity and focus on education

Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi has urged over 6,000 first-year students to shun promiscuity and focus on education.

Kisii University students have been asked to avoid being promiscuous because it leads to unnecessary pregnancies that interrupt their studies as they defer to go home and nurse their children.

Addressing more than 6000 first-year students who are undergoing orientation week on Wednesday, the University’s VC Prof Nathan Ogechi said that when students get pregnant and give birth before they complete their education, they double the burden of their parents, who take care of both the unplanned babies and their daughters.

“Avoid rushing into being young parents at the expense of your education; these things are waiting for you, and they become more enjoyable when you have your own money that you can spend in any way you want,” he said.

The University’s Acting Registrars flanked the VC, Professors Kennedy Getanda and Christopher Ngecho, who urged the new students to approach their studies with zeal and strive for good results at the end of their courses, thereby enabling them to remain self-sustainable in their future lives.

He asked them to avoid copying their colleagues, especially those who come from rich families, who may lure them into social evils like sex before marriage, drug use, and trafficking that will ruin their lives.

The Vice Chancellor assured learners of their security and the best academic services they would receive at the institution, but stated that all these would depend on their personal conduct and the goals they set to achieve in life.

He appealed to those who have not yet reported to their institutions to hurry up and catch up with time to avoid forfeiting their chances of admission, adding that having been admitted to the University is not a guarantee that one will be contained there without adhering to the University’s rules and regulations.

Saying that the institution admits many students from different parts of the country and abroad, he asked students to adopt the spirit of patriotism, brotherhood, and love for easy coexistence during their stay at the institution.

The don asked students to rise above ethnic stereotypes, which he said can easily trigger the worst among learners and lead to the disruption of smooth learning.

Answering questions from Education News, the VC said that the University has the capacity to admit more than 8,000 students, noting that this year’s admission was slightly higher than that to accommodate the majority of female students who deferred their courses last year.

Concerning the alleged increase in rent by landlords surrounding the University, Prof. Ogechi was hesitant to comment, saying that it was the house owners’ affair outside the Institution.

He assured parents that their children’s security was ensured in the rental houses outside the University, as the institution was working closely with local administrators to ensure the security of both staff and students.

However, parents must be aware of the conditions in which their children are and check on them frequently.
