Kisii University to establish research department to attract Govt funding

Kisii University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nathan Ogechi

Kisii University will establish the Department of Research and Extension Services with an aim to elevate the university to first-class status, attracting more professors and students, and in turn bolster funding from the national government.

Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Nathan Ogechi said that the department will play a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing talent from local schools and the community and further harness their potential in innovation and technology.

He added that in line with its commitment to community involvement, the university has partnered with local schools in resource-sharing initiatives.

Furthermore, the VC highlighted that the University has made significant strides in academic excellence, with its Law and Medicine programmes consistently ranking among the best nationally and regionally.

He noted that the institution has enrolled 8,102 students in compliance with the government’s directive to admit students without fees, out of the expected 10,102 with over 70% of these students resuming their studies.

The VC said that the institution can accommodate 500 students in its hostels, with additional students finding lodging in community-built hostels.

Acknowledging financial challenges, the VC expressed optimism that the new higher education funding model, in collaboration with stakeholders, would help overcome these hurdles further adding that plans are in motion to define the university’s niche, focusing on either Health Sciences or Information and Communication Technology (ICT), with the aim of attracting more government funding.
