Kisii to prioritize pregnant mothers, children in mosquito net distribution

the County Executive Secretary to the Cabinet, Ronald Nyakweba

The Kisii County government is set to distribute three mosquito nets per household, with a focus on pregnant mothers and children, as part of a proactive measure against malaria during the ongoing extended rainy season.

Speaking during a public address in Kisii town, the County Executive Secretary to the Cabinet, Ronald Nyakweba, emphasized the vulnerability of these demographic groups to the disease.

“We aim to raise awareness within the community about the correct usage of nets to prevent mosquito bites,” Nyakweba stated during a public address in Kisii town.

He further urged artists and schools to create and perform songs centered around the fight against malaria, citing their effectiveness in disseminating messages through education and entertainment.

In a plea to the Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Ezekiel Machogu, Nyakweba proposed leveraging students as advocates for malaria prevention, emphasizing their ability to swiftly promote hygiene practices in homes.

“The Ministry of Education should enlist students as primary agents of change, considering they will be the most affected by these changes,” he urged.

Additionally, Nyakweba encouraged communities to prioritize malaria testing before treatment to avoid administering different drugs for potentially varied ailments.

The initiative seeks to safeguard vulnerable populations and promote a proactive approach to malaria prevention.
