The family of a secondary school teacher in Manga sub county is grieving after he allegedly committed suicide by throwing himself into a swamp on Sunday.

According to villagers, the Gesure Secondary school teacher reported to church early in the morning and left his stationery inside with other worshipers as he excused himself outside.

After a few minutes, the worshippers got wind of the sad news from a child who saw the 39-year-old teacher, Joseck Ondara, plunge himself into the swamp.

They tried to rescue him but their efforts bore no fruits because the swamp was too deep.

They informed Manga Sub County Police officers who removed the body to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.

Police Commander James Mitugo said that they had commenced investigations into the death.

The officer briefed that preliminary findings showed that the deceased was under threats from debtors who vowed to eliminate him if he did not pay back their money.

Following the incident, teachers have been asked to embrace prudent ways of managing their finances to save themselves and their families from such problems.

Speaking after condoling with the family and relatives of the deceased, Manga Sub County Director of Education Michael Anditi said that teachers should engage themselves in constructive economic activities like farming and businesses instead of depending on loans.

The deceased is survived by a widow and two children.

The teacher’s death comes a week after his colleague from St. Peters Kebersi committed suicide over a domestic disagreement that led to his wife abandoning him for more than a year.
