Monkeys have invaded some parts of Nyamira and Kisii Counties causing great disturbance to school children and damage of crops.
At Moteoguto village of Kiabonyoru Ward of Nyamira County the residents narrated an incident where the monkeys snatched a school bag from a grade two pupil who was on his way going home from school and disappeared with it, only to be discovered after two days with soiled books.
“Since then other children have feared going to school without their parents’ escort as the animals chase them thinking that they are carrying food in the school bags,” said Erick Morara.
Josephine Momanyi also narrated how the animals sneaked into her kitchen ate all the remaining food in the room, tilted water cans in the house and poured everything down leaving the house in a mess.

Other residents complained of the monkeys that live in the heart of forests along the local rivers, which emerge and invade farms, destroying premature wimbi, maize and nappier grass meant for feeding livestock.
The residents feared of famine that might affect them as a result of the damaged crops by the wild animals.
They are appealing to Kenya Wild Services (KWS) to intervene and take animals away or provide an enclosure for them in the area to avoid wild life human beings conflicts.
“We know the want food for survival in the very way we want it but the government should protect us and our children from them,” said Jepter Marando.
