Parents of Maji-mazuri Secondary School in Nyamache Sub-county have thanked Kisii County Governor Simba Arati for stepping in to help their children with materials to help them continue with learning after their dormitory was burnt down.

The sudden night fire destroyed the boys’ dormitory with a capacity of 200 students, whose bedding, including books, perished.

The origin of the fire was not immediately apparent, as the watchmen were the first to notice it and raise an alarm for help, but it was too late for the villagers and firefighters from Kisii town to come in and contain the fire.

“We thanked God although much property was destroyed, none of our children and teachers were hurt because life is more valuable than any property,” said one of the School Management Board members who identified himself as Joseph Morag’a.

Learning about the misfortune, Governor Arati and his team visited the school on Monday. They donated 100,000 shillings to rebuild the dormitory, along with 776 blankets and bed sheets, as well as other assorted items, including 240 water basins, to help the affected students adjust and continue their studies uninterrupted.

He assured the parents that the Kisii County Government will partner with the National Government to install CCTV cameras in every secondary school in the region to enable teachers to monitor against any evil-minded people who torch schools for unknown reasons.

The Governor stated that the installation of cameras in the institutions will facilitate the management and movement of students and teachers within the schools.

He appealed to Bobasi Constituency MP Innocent Obiri to use emergency funds from the NG-CDF kitty to help the school build and complete the dormitory and ease the financial burden on parents.

“I ask the area MP, who is my friend although I don’t know where he is, to come in and pay attention to such a bad happening and share with the affected students and their parents,” he said.

The governor said that although primary and secondary education have not evolved, the county government will continue to support development projects in the sector because they will help children who belong to this country.
