Members of the public and schoolchildren of Kisii County are set to plant 110,000 tree seedlings, a concerted effort to combat the adverse effects of climate change.

County Commissioner Tom Anjere announced that 20,000 seedlings will find their roots at Nsaria Hill in Kisii South, while an additional 10,000 will be planted at Nyangweta Forest in Gucha South.

“Information and Communications Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owallo will lead the tree-planting ceremony at Nsaria Hill,” the Commissioner noted.

Anjere further encouraged everyone to participate, aiming for each person to plant at least two trees, fostering increased forest cover throughout the county.

The Commissioner highlighted the completion of preparations and disclosed plans to plant a total of 4.5 million seedlings.

“To minimize disruption to the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Examination, schoolchildren have been actively involved in weekend tree planting,” he stated.

Anjere, flanked by County National Environment Management Authority Director Simon Tanui, Police Commander Charles Kases, and Kisii Prison Officer in Charge Oliver Rapando, announced that Deputy County Commissioners will replicate the event in their respective sub-counties.

“Each Deputy County Commissioner has been entrusted with 10,000 seedlings to mobilize residents for planting,” the commissioner highlighted.

Emphasizing the selection of indigenous trees, Anjere underscores the initiative’s focus on environmental protection and conservation.

Despite heavy rains, he assured that stakeholders have implemented measures to safeguard the ongoing examinations, reporting smooth progress without incidents.
