Kisii Children’s Officer urges parents to invest in children’s education, wellbeing

Kenyenya Subcounty Children's Officer Kevin Obara

The Children’s Officer of Kenyenya Sub County, Kisii, Kevin Obara has urged parents to invest in their children’s education and wellbeing, emphasizing the illegality and consequences of neglecting their responsibilities.

Addressing parents, teachers, and students during the Prayer Day for Kenyenya Secondary School’s Form Four candidates, Obara encouraged those with surplus food and clothing to assist disadvantaged students.

He revealed that two out of every five cases reported to his office involve children suffering abuse due to parental negligence or separation due to financial hardships.

The school’s principal, Mr. Wilfred Nyakundi, expressed optimism about the students’ performance in upcoming exams, attributing their preparedness to extensive practice through internal and external examinations.

“Despite challenges such as unpaid school fees and issues with drug abuse and indiscipline, he commended his teaching staff for their unwavering commitment to addressing these issues,” he said.

Nyakundi also highlighted that this year, the school is set to present 72 candidates for KCSE, including 36 girls—an increase from the previous year.

He attributed to community efforts to discourage teenage pregnancies and early marriages, which have historically led to high dropout rates among girls.

The Principal further highlighted the school’s target of achieving a mean score of 5.3, an improvement from last year’s 4.8.

He commended the chaplaincy department for providing spiritual nourishment, guidance, and counseling services to students during their time away from home.

The event was attended by the School’s Management Committee, led by retired education officer Grace Ogetii, who advised students to cultivate self-motivation and dedication for academic success.
