Etago Parrish Catholic Church Priest Dominic Gesimba has urged parents to teach their children the true meaning of Christianity, amid the rising indiscipline among the youth.

Speaking at Metaburo Catholic Church on Palm Sunday, Fr. Gesimba emphasized the importance of instilling values of humility and obedience in children, citing Jesus Christ’s example as a humble village boy who gained acceptance through his devotion to God.

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where he was welcomed by crowds waving palm branches and shouting “Hosanna!” (Save us!). This event marks the beginning of Holy Week, leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

The significance of Palm Sunday lies in its symbolism: Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem on a donkey demonstrated humility and servant leadership, while the crowds’ recognition of him as the Messiah showed their faith in him. The palm branches represented victory and triumph, foreshadowing Jesus’ ultimate victory over death.

The priest lamented the great number of students, especially boys, who indulge in indecent acts during the school off days.

He attributed this to failure of adults to uphold decent life, leading the youth copy their misleading behavior. He appealed to Catholic church elders to join hands with other elders to condemn the behavior if the youth are to be salvaged from these social fangs of immorality.

During the thrilling and solemn occasion, Fr. Gesimba, flanked by his altar boys, led the congregation to walk the paths of the beautiful green canopy surrounding the church and reminded the youth to remain focused, lively like the leafy trees in the calm environment.

Father Gesimba observed that youths’ waywardness in society can be attributed to various factors, including peer pressure, lack of parental guidance, and exposure to harmful influences through media and social platforms. Some youth may also be driven by curiosity, a desire for thrill-seeking, or a need for acceptance and belonging. Additionally, societal issues like poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education and opportunities can contribute to wayward behavior.

The priest sent a warning on the effects of youth involvement in drug abuse, early sex, and playing cards, saying it can be devastating. Drug abuse can lead to addiction, health problems, and poor academic performance. Early sex can result in unintended pregnancies, STIs, and emotional distress. Gambling can lead to financial problems, stress, and social isolation.
