Kirinyaga teachers threaten boycotting teaching until Wanjiru killers are arrested

A section of teachers allied to the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Kirinyaga County have threatened to boycott teaching until the killer of the Junior Secondary School teacher, Betty Wanjiru Nyaga is arrested and justice served.

Led by the Union secretary Josphat Kariuki, the JSS teachers said they will not report to their various schools until the killer of Betty Wanjiru is arrested.

“As KUPPET teachers from Kirinyaga County, we will not report to our schools until the killer of Betty who was our member is arrested,” said Kariuki.

Kariuki said that when they received information on Betty’s death, they were shocked, devastated and could not believe it.

He stated that on Monday before her missing, she attended her lessons well and decided to visit her boyfriend in Ngurubani town where he works, from Wednesday, March 11, there was no information regarding her whereabouts, only to get information from the brother who is also a teacher that she had been killed and the killer (the boyfriend) instructed the family where to get her lifeless body.

Ms.Nyaga was a teacher at Ithiga ri Njuki in Mwea East subcounty before her death and her body of was found dumped at the banks of River Nyamindi, Thursday morning.

According to the police reports, her body sustained multiple injuries, including visible wounds on the head, thighs, and legs, as well as bruises on the face.

The Police are still looking for a man suspected to have killed a 28 year old Junior Secondary school teacher.

Officers who visited the residence found the four-roomed mud-and-brick house completely destroyed by the blaze, with nothing salvaged.

Police suspect the house may have been the primary crime scene and that the fire was intended to destroy evidence.

The brother Alex Nyaga said that following the sisters murder, the parents have suffered mentally as she was the breadwinner.

“Since my parents learnt of Wanjiru’s death, they became sick, father is mentally disturbed as well as mum, her child has been left without a mother, the killer has destroyed our family as she was the breadwinner” Betty’s brother said.

Mwea East sub-County police commander Stephen Okal has urged teachers to be patient.

“Teachers please be patient, we will make an arrest, we have not relaxed, we are following leads that will make us arrest him,” said Okal.

Nominated MCA Lucy Njeri has condemned the killing saying gender violence.

“I condemn the killing of Betty, such killings must stop,” said Njeri.
