With school holidays in full swing, safeguarding children from the dangers of unchecked gadget use has become a priority, says Kipsigis professional, Geoffrey Kurgat.

Speaking after visiting Umoja Children’s Home in Singorwet ward, Bomet Central sub-county, Kurgat urged parents to actively guide their children on the responsible use of mobile phones, tablets and other digital devices.

“Gadgets are powerful tools, but without guidance, they can expose children to harmful content,” Kurgat warned.

He encouraged parents to teach their children to use technology for homework, learning and skill development, rather than being distracted by inappropriate videos or social media trends.

During the visit, Kurgat donated warm clothing and foodstuffs to the children, emphasizing that caring for their immediate needs should go hand in hand with teaching life skills and digital responsibility.

He also called on leaders to use holidays as an opportunity to mentor vulnerable children and inspire hope for a better future.

“Education and guidance must continue even during holidays. Every child deserves to be safe, learn, and grow,” he said.

He stressed that protecting children online is as important as protecting them physically, noting that the holiday period is a time when children are most exposed to both risks.

With elections approaching, Kurgat also reminded political leaders that peace and order are crucial for children’s safety.

“When campaigns are violent, it is the children who suffer the most. Let us focus on ideas, not goons,” he said.

He highlighted the role of parents and society in nurturing responsible, safe and empowered children, saying, “Guiding children on how to use technology wisely is part of protecting their future and serving humanity.”
