The family of Rodgers Kipruto, the Kenyan student who took his own life due to depression in Finland, is in agony after the country’s authorities notified them to collect the body in 21 days failure to which they threatened to dispose of it.

The diseased was among the 202 students from Uasin Gishu County who went to Finland to study in an airlift programme between the county government and three universities in Finland – Laurea, Jyvaskylla, and Tampere universities – which have been hit by controversy recently.

Kipruto, who is reported to have been depressed and complained of hardship after leaving Kenya for Finland on October 30, 2022. He was a student at Laurea University studying for a degree in nursing after quitting his job as a nurse at Nakuru Level Five Hospital.

Mr Jonathan Kosgey, the father of the deceased, has admitted that the family is unable to bring the body for burial and have organised a fundraiser on Friday to raise a whopping Ksh3 million as the family had exhausted its resources while sending him to study.

“We have been notified that within 21 days the body should have been flown or the Finnish authorities will dispose of it. All Kenyans of good will, we are pleading with you to help us give him a decent send-off,” he pleaded.

At the same time, local leaders from the county continue to pile pressure on the government to castigate the airlift programme, saying it has subjected the more than 200 students to untold suffering and called for a speedy solution to avert more loss of life.
