Malindi and Magarini sub-counties in Kilifi county urgently require 1,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to cope with the high population of learners, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Malindi branch has revealed.
Speaking to Education News in his Malindi town office, branch Executive Secretary Moses Mramba decried the acute shortage of teachers in the two sub-counties, which he said has hindered effective teaching and learning in schools.
He said that 540 teachers are needed in Malindi sub-county, while the rest are needed in Magarini sub-county.
Mramba, also KNUT Kilifi county Chairman, attributed poor performance in national examinations to insufficient teachers.
“Despite the shortage in the county, teachers in service have been dedicated to their work,” he added.
The union boss also called on the government to allocate more funds towards renovation and construction of modern infrastructure in schools to ensure a conducive learning environment.
He regretted that many schools in the county still lack classrooms, thus forcing children to learn while sitting on logs, stones and dusty floors.
