Kigari Teachers College on verge of closing due to lack of students

Concerns have been raised over the status of Kigari Teachers Training College (TTC) which local leaders claim is on the verge of collapsing.

The leaders have expressed their worry over the school enrollment, which stands at 100 students against the school’s accommodation capacity of more than 1,500 students.

Ruguru Gandori Member of County Assembly Muturi Mwombo noted that the school has been experiencing very low turn out of students with the last intake being the worst where only three students registered for teaching courses in the institution.

Muturi said that it would present a bad picture to see the history-rich institution started in 1910 get closed, calling on government and stakeholders to rise to the occasion and save the institution.

“This college is closing. It has only 100 students against 100 teachers. This is really bad, something need to be done because this is not the Kigari Teachers College we knew,” said Muturi.

He urged parents to encourage their children to take up teaching courses saying it was marketable in job market.

Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji while speaking while closing the Drama festivals for Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutes, he urged parents not to discourage their children from taking teaching courses.

He said his office shall give out bursaries to all students fairly stressing that those who will be joining the TTC from his constituency will be given priority.

“This college is ours and I am really disappointed to hear it has only 100 students. We are ready to support those who will be joining here,” said Mukunji.

Kigari Teachers Training college is the oldest Anglican institution established in Eastern Kenya by missionaries in 1910.
