Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development CEO Prof Charles Ong’ondo has urged learners to be ambassadors of planting trees both at school and homes to achieve the country’s forest cover campaign.
Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) partneerd with Orero Boys High School to plant more trees and increase the forest cover in county for the purpose of fighting climate change and increment of food security in the region.
Speaking at Orero Boys High School, where he launched a tree planting exercise on Wednesday, Prof Ong’ondo, encouraged students to plant more trees as they are well positioned considering that they are young and energetic ;and can use their physical strength and intellect to interact positively with nature as they engage in the environmental conservationist activities.

He also challenged neighboring schools to think of starting internal competitions on tree planting and caring; for the purpose of creating the urge to succeed against one another, adding that through this the culture of taking care of mother environment will be aroused, nurtured and preserved in the region.

“I ask learners to explore their talents in sports and other areas like resource management and conservation under the Competency Based Curriculum for their individual benefits and the nation,” he said.
The KICD boss asked directors of education from the region, to mobilize resources and craft their home tailored projections aimed at the protection of the environment through tree planting and garbage collection.
The professor lauded Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School for starting their local programmes on tree planting a project; saying,it has trickled down to most of the schools in the county.
The Special Programmes African Consortium( SPAC) Chief executive officer Dr.Grace Nyaera, who accompanied Prof Ong’ondo; said that her office will donate trophies for competing school that will be actively be involved in the tree planting exercise.
“Our office is making good progress with schools in the exercise of tree planting, and we are promising to support you to grow both academically and as responsible citizens.” she said.
The CEO also revealed that her organization has entered into partnership of tree planting exercise with various schools in Kisii and Nyamira Counties saying that Orero School is pioneering the exercise from Homabay County.
Singling out Cardinal Otunga Mosocho and Sameta Boys’ High Schools in Kisii County for championing the planting exercise in the region; Dr Nyaera attributed their success to the availability of enough land and willingness of the institutions to embrace the presidential call to plant more trees in the country to address the issue of climate change.
She thanked hospitality industry like Hotel Kamel Park in Kisii, which have sponsored many schools with both finances and skills for planting trees to help mitigate climate change.
Dr Nyaera encouraged heads of schools and teachers’ Union bodies to use sports and drama meetings to sensitize the populace on importance of fighting climate change and food insecurity for their welfare and the posterity.
