The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has released updated guidelines for the submission of curriculum support materials for Senior School under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) 2025 edition.

The institute has also extended the submission deadline to August 12, 2025, giving publishers and other interested parties more time to present their materials for evaluation and approval.

In the latest directive, KICD has revised the list of literary texts required for Literature in English and Fasihi ya Kiswahili for Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Publishers are now required to submit a Kenyan novel, an autobiography, a biography, an anthology of short stories, an anthology of poetry, a textbook on oral literature, and a textbook on poetry under Literature in English. The anthologies must include works from Kenya, Africa and the wider global literary community to ensure diversity and relevance.

For Fasihi ya Kiswahili, the required texts are Wasifu, a collection of thirty short stories compiled in a single book (Hadithi Fupi), Kitabu cha Fasihi Simulizi, and Kitabu cha Mashairi. These revisions are meant to enrich the learning experience of Senior School students who have opted to study Kiswahili literature.

KICD has outlined that all literary texts submitted must be rich in content, with well-developed plots, themes, characters, stylistic elements and language.

The materials should engage learners deeply while being relevant to their academic level, age and psychosocial development. Anthologies of short stories and poetry must present varied plots and themes that align with CBC core competencies, values and Pertinent Contemporary Issues (PCIs).

For autobiographies and biographies, KICD has emphasized preference for Kenyan or African contexts. However, texts from other parts of the world will also be accepted if they demonstrate strong relevance to the curriculum and the learners’ environment.

The submission deadline has been moved from August 6, 2025, to August 12, 2025. All submissions must be made by 12:00 p.m. on the revised date. KICD will open and announce the submitted materials at 12:30 p.m. on the same day in the presence of publishers who wish to attend. The session will be held at the KICD offices located on Desai Road, off Murang’a Road in Nairobi.

Any further enquiries regarding the submission of materials should be directed to the Director and Chief Executive Officer of KICD through P.O. Box 30231 – 00100 Nairobi, Kenya. They may also reach the institute via email at info@kicd.ac.ke or materialevaluation@kicd.ac.ke.

The updates are part of KICD’s ongoing efforts to ensure that Senior School learners have access to high-quality, relevant learning resources that nurture their potential and prepare them for current social, economic and political realities both locally and globally.
