The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) was this week honoured for its outstanding performance in Technology and Public Service Delivery during the 2025 African Public Sector Conference and Awards (APSCA) held in Cape Town, South Africa.

During the event which brought together policymakers, top government officials, and innovators from across Africa to celebrate transformative governance through digital innovation, the institute was celebrated as a trailblazer in the use of inclusive technology tools to enhance access and equity in the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE). Under the theme “Innovation of Africa’s Public Sector: Building a Digitally Driven, Sustainable, and Integrated Continent,”

In widely circulated press release, KICD Director and CEO, Prof. Charles Ong’ondo said that Kenya emerged as one of the biggest winners at the 6th APSCA 2025, recognized as a continental leader in digital transformation across various sectors.

“KICD’s contribution to leveraging technology to increase access, equity, and inclusion in Competency Based Education dates back to the inception of the Radio Broadcasts to Schools,” said Prof. Ong’ondo, “Through technological advancement, the Institute has innovated more digital platforms to bridge the gap and make education accessible to all, including those in refugees’ camps.”

Prof Ong’ondo added that the award highlights how KICD has harnessed technology to design, develop, produce, and disseminate digital curriculum support materials that improve access and inclusion for regular learners, Special Needs Education (SNE) learners, teacher trainees, and educators.

“KICD’s innovative approaches span multiple platforms, including Radio, Television, and the Kenya Education Cloud (KEC). These platforms significantly expand access to instructional materials nationwide.” Ong’ondo said

He further reiterated that at the heart of this recognition is the Kenya Education Cloud (KEC), a digital learning hub offering curated eLearning resources, educational tools, and innovative content for students, teachers, and institutions.

“KEC comprises several platforms, including the Content Management System, Learning Management System, Elimika Platform, and an Open Education Resources Portal. All resources are freely accessible and available on the KICD website,” he said

The Institute which also runs vibrant, interactive educational Radio and Television Programmes; The EDU TV Channel broadcasts educational content 24/7, helps bridge the teacher-to-learner ratio and making learning accessible even in remote areas.

“Where television signals are limited, though rare in this new dispensation, Interactive Radio Programmes are transmitted via the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) English Service Channel. “Radio has proven especially effective in reaching vulnerable and marginalized communities due to its accessibility, flexibility, and affordability,” affirmed Prof. Ong’ondo.

The recognitions follow the KICD’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic to use radio broadcasts and EDU TV lessons in ensuring continuity of learning despite a nine-month national lockdown.

“All content remains available on demand through the KEC,” said Eunice Gackoa, Head of the KICD Educational Media Directorate. She was among the delegation which attended the conference. Other KICD delegation included Dr. Joseph Wambua and Charles Munene

APSCA celebrates excellence and innovation in the public sector, recognizing individuals and institutions that demonstrate leadership, creativity, and impact. This year’s theme focused on how governments are harnessing digital tools to improve efficiency and inclusivity, an area where KICD excelled.
