KICD confirms new KCSE set book will reach schools by end of month

Prof. Charles O. Ong’ondo, KICD CEO. He has confirmed that a new Kiswahili set book for KCSE will reach schools by the end of January.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has confirmed that the Kiswahili set book ‘Nguu za Jadi’ by Prof Clara Momanyi,  which replaces ‘Chozi La Heri’ by Assumpta K. Matei, will reach schools by the end of this month.

KICD Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prof Charles Ong’ondo told Education News that he is aware of the delays and that the book has not reached schools.

He said KICD has stepped in after the publisher encountered some challenges.

“I am aware of the delay; the publisher had some challenges but KICD has stepped in and we expect distribution to be completed by the end of the month,” said Prof Ong’ondo.

The book was among the set books that were recommended by the curriculum developer (KICD) for secondary schools. There have been concerns by principals that the delay will jeopardize the current candidate class since they will not have sufficient time to study it.

Their anxiety also grew because the Ministry of Education (MoE) had not issued any circular on when the book should be available.

Other setbooks that KICD approved include a Kiswahili play ‘Bembea’ by Dr Timothy Moriasi,  which replaces ‘Kigogo’ by Pauline Kea Kyovi, and ‘Mapambazuko ya Machweo na Hadithi Nyingine’,  a Kiswahili short story  that takes the place of ‘Tumbo Lisiloshiba na Hadithi Nyingine’.

For Literature in English, the set books are ‘Father of Nations’ by Paul B. Vitta (compulsory novel) that replaces ‘Blossoms of the Savannah’, and ‘The Samaritan’  by John Lara, which is a compulsory play to replace ‘A Doll’s House’  by Henrik Ibsen.

Other texts are ‘Artist of the Floating World’  by Kazuo Ishiguro, an optional novel that replaces ‘The Pearl’  by John Steinbeck, ‘A Silent Song and Other Stories’  edited by Godwin Siundu, an optional short story anthology in place of ‘Memories We Lost’, and ‘Parliament of Owls’  by Adipo Sidang, an optional play in place of ‘Inheritance’  by David Mulwa.

From the three optional books, students choose only one.
