The county government of Kiambu has developed model Early Childhood and Development Education (ECDE) centres across the county, and as such, many other counties have been visiting these centres to benchmark and upgrade theirs.

The Governor of Kiambu, Kimani Wamatangi, has completed 247 ECDE centres and is embarking on 62 others, which will be completed in June this year.

All the centres are identical and have state-of-the-art finishing. They have PP1 and PP2 classrooms, administrative offices in the middle, and separate ablution blocks for both learners and teachers.

They also have play areas comprising swings, tunnels and sand pits similar to those in private academies.

All the centres have introduced free feeding programmes where children get a cup of nutritious porridge daily.

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, the children are also given boiled eggs. Every Thursday, they drink a packet of milk courtesy of ‘Maziwa Freshi na Wamatangi.’

At the beginning of every January, free learning materials are provided to all the ECDE centres in an ambitious plan to make the learning process totally free and enjoyable.
