Khetias Supermarkets has entered into a new partnership with Germany’s Hurburg Foundation to expand education support for needy students across Kenya.
The initiative builds on a three-decade legacy of sponsorships that began with the education of a single orphan in Bungoma County, spearheaded by the chain’s founder, Ashok Khetias.
Over the years, the collaboration has grown to benefit more than 400 students locally and abroad, with diaspora friends of Ashok also contributing to the programme. The supermarket chain now plans to extend the support to regions where it has established operations, including Meru, Nyeri, and Thika.
Since its inception in 1995, Khetias has supported over 300 students while employing hundreds of workers directly and many more indirectly. Beyond education, the chain has partnered with schools on environmental and health programmes, reinforcing its commitment to community development.
Operations Manager Bernard Adera noted that despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has sustained its social responsibility efforts with the backing of loyal customers.

Adera explained that the partnership remains anchored on the Hurburg Foundation, while county leaders have played a key role in identifying and supporting needy students and families.
“With the assistance of the Foundation and the support of elected and appointed leaders under devolved governments, we have been able to succeed in giving back to the community,” Mr Adera said. He added that information provided by local leaders has been instrumental in guiding the company’s education initiatives.
Speaking from the Kitale headquarters, Mr Adera emphasized that as the economy continues to recover, Khetias expects to expand both its operations and its support for vulnerable groups. “We anticipate adding more to our current situation, both in terms of employment opportunities and assistance to needy families,” he said.
