Khasoko Boys High School in Bungoma County has been closed indefinitely with only the Form Four class remaining to continue with their studies.
This comes days after one of the students died while undergoing treatment at the Bungoma County Referral Hospital.
School Principal Daniel Masombo said the post-mortem report showed that the boy died of acute malaria.
He added that the school closure was as a result of recommendations by the Ministry of Education (MoE) after tension rose following deaths in other schools in the neighbouring Kakamega County.
Bungoma County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Dr. Andrew Wamalwa noted that the post-mortem also revealed that the student had developed a perforation in the stomach that led to Peritonitis – which happens when the thin layer of tissue inside the abdomen becomes inflamed due to bacterial or fungal infection.
Dr. Wamalwa added that the county has already sent a team to the school to collect food and water samples that will be sent to Nairobi for further analysis to establish the cause of the infection.
The CECM, however, said the death is an isolated case as there is no other similar incident that has been reported in the institution.
