Busia County Ecosystem Conservator Vitalis Osodo has said that the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) will plant three million tree seedlings across Busia with an aim of conserving, protecting and increasing the country’s forest cover.
Speaking during a Linda Mazingira Initiative Kenya program in Malaba Township School, he said that tree planting will ensure issues of climate change are solved. From the three million seedlings, the KFS has planted 1.5 million.
Osodo stated that they were working with other partners to ensure the target of 30 per cent tree cover is achieved on time.
“The new government in partnership with Linda Mazingira Initiative Kenya and the Dedan Kimathi Foundation should initiate greening school programs as an academic activity where schools indulge themselves in planting trees. This will help fight the adverse effects of climate change,” he said.
The Conservator said that KFS was educating the society more about planting money making trees such as avocado and mango for both tree planting, environmental conservation and nutrition.
“Our goal as a team is to work with KFS to plant two million tree seedlings on hills and swampy areas affected by soil erosion,” said Patrick Ikwara, Busia County Linda Mazingira Initiative coordinator.
Dedan Kimathi Foundation representative, Dickson Maina concluded by saying that their aim was to collaborate with KFS and plant 30 million trees in the next 10 years across the country.
