Kenya Tertiary and Schools Workers Union, Migori branch wants the Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission to investigate the misuse of funds in the learning institutions across the country.
Sylvanus Nyamwani, the union Chair has been working in fear of being fired from his place of work for highlighting and airing worker’s grievances to the school administrators.
While addressing the press in Migori town, Nyamwani said most of the workers in secondary schools have not been paid since February this year. According to him, the situation has turned from better to worse since their grievances are served with dismissal threats.
“Most of our members have been threatened by their employers to be relieved of their duties for asking for their wages,” said Nyamwani.
He said the administrators of various institution have no reason for not paying their workers and should therefore be held accountable for the misuse of funds especially what is meant for the workers.
The workers who accused the school heads of intimidation instead of reaching an agreement in terms of payment have also blamed the Ministry of Education for not heeding to their pleas even after writing a letter to the officers in charge.
However, County Director of Education Mrs. Elizabeth Otieno denied the allegations by the union saying she has not received any letter from the union regarding the matter.
Otieno urged the workers to be patient citing that no money has been disbursed to the institutions since the beginning of the year.
“Money has not been disbursed to the institutions even before the closure of schools in March to avert the spread of the Covid-19,” said Mrs. Otieno.
