The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) is adopting a new rotational leadership dispensation in today’s elections after making some amendments to its constitutions last year.
The objective is to have a leadership that reflects the face of the country, with a number of proposals being fronted to that effect, which will highly depend on the outcome of the elections that are held today as the 2024 Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) kicks off in Mombasa.
The conference runs until the end of the week.
According to the new arrangement, the chairperson position has been left to Central region after the exit of Kahi Indimuli upon retirement from service and who held the position for close to 10 years.
The position is so influential that apart from the office holder being the spokesperson of the association, will also be the head of Secretariat and presides over all committee meetings, being a member of all of them.
The Vice Chairperson position, which is currently held by Bonface Karisa, will now go to Rift Valley region; while the National Treasurer currently held by Amos Cherono from Rift Valley will go to Nyanza.
The National Assistant (Vice) Treasurer will now go to Eastern. The position is currently being held by Lucy Rukunga.
For the first time since inception, the new leadership proposition will see North Eastern region getting a substantive position as the next National Secretary will have to come from there.
The current Secretary Willie Kuria, who hails from Central region and the current acting Chairperson, in office since the exit of Indimuli, is seen as the likely successor.
Coast region has been left with the position of National Assistant (Vice) Secretary, currently being held by Abdi Noor Haji.
Western region will take the position of Assistant Organizing Secretary, currently held by Godfery Owori.
The National Organizing Secretary will be relinquished by Andrew Buop to Nairobi region.
In its reviewed Constitution, the association has incorporated the regional chairpersons in the National Executive Council (NEC) as automatic members. This is because the regions have been adopted as part of its branches.
Cherono, who has held the position of National Treasurer for the last 10 years, will be retiring, confirming to Education News that he will not be contesting for any position.
“I will not be vying for any seat because my two terms are gone, so I will be retiring honourably. I want to thank KESSHA for having given me that privilege to serve for those 10 years and I want to believe that those who are coming on board will be able to build it and even do better,” said Cherono.
He noted that the association has achieved a lot under their leadership, key among them being hosting the African Confederation of Principals, and the International Confederation of Principals, which will take place in August this year.
“We’ve been able to push for recognition in various SAGAs like KNEC and KICD. Ours is purely a professional body and we always consult other stakeholders and we have been able to work harmoniously. Our members are in all the boards in the counties, so that we are effectively represented in all welfare matters touching on education,” added Cherono.
