The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Machakos chapter has called on parents to take a more active role in disciplining their children, warning that teachers alone cannot shoulder the responsibility.

Speaking during a visit to Matungulu Boys High School, Stephen Kavuvu, the county KESSHA chairman, said indiscipline among students is increasingly being blamed on teachers, yet the root of the problem often starts at home.

“Parents must play their part in guiding children, teachers cannot do it all. Discipline begins at home, and it is crucial for parents to engage with their children from a young age,” Kavuvu said.

The visit came in the wake of unrest at the school, which saw four dormitories burnt following a night of student protests.

Addressing the learners directly, Kavuvu urged them to seek non-violent ways to express grievances.

“Instead of destroying property or burning dormitories, walk out peacefully. It’s easier, safer, and less destructive. Use your voice, not violence, to demand change,” he said.

He also reassured that the school is already reconstructing the damaged dormitories, with efforts underway to restore learning and living facilities to their previous standards.

Kavuvu concluded by stressing the importance of collaboration between parents, teachers, and students.

“When parents and teachers work together, students thrive. Discipline is a shared responsibility, not a burden for one side alone,” he said.

He also urged parents to regularly engage with schools and monitor their children’s behaviour and encourage them to channel frustrations through dialogue instead of destructive acts.
