KESSHA decries inconsistent amounts, delay release of capitation to schools

The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association, (KESSHA) has expressed concern over the amount and delayed disbursement of capitation funds,

Kuresoi South KESSHA Chairman John Ng’eno said it was shameful that schools are forced to wait weeks after reopening before receiving government funding.

Speaking at Amalo Secondary School, Ngeno said that the situation is crippling learning activities in public schools.

“Some of our colleagues are being forced to go into hiding to avoid suppliers and contractors who are demanding payment for services already rendered,” said Ng’eno.

According to him, principals have been forced to seek other means of getting funds to run schools, which include sending students home, which he says disrupts learning.

Ngeno, who was flanked by other KESSHA officials, noted that the amount recently released to schools was insufficient to meet operational needs, leaving many institutions struggling to procure learning materials and settle pending bills.

“The delay has severely affected learning. Without adequate resources, it’s nearly impossible to run schools effectively,” he added.

KESSHA is now calling on the government not only to ensure timely release of funds but also increase the capitation amount, which it says falls short of the growing financial demands in secondary schools.
