KESSHA boss: Guidance, counseling helps stem unrests in schools

By Agnes Orang’o

Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Kathiani Chairman Joseph Nzioka has pointed out that an effective guidance and counseling programme is key to solving school unrests.

Nzioka, who is also the principal of Mitaboni Boys High School, said that students should be counseled to help them appreciate and understand that schools will shape their future.

He said that some students are in schools yet they don’t know why they are studying hence if they are advised on the importance of education, they will change their mindsets.

“Guidance and counseling enables school administrations to solve students’ issues before they turn into resentment,” he added.

He pointed out that when he joined Mitaboni Boys, there were so many cases of unrests and that as a result of the guidance and counseling policy, the cases reduced.

Nzioka noted that strong school rules and regulations in line with the education act come in handy.

He commended Kathiani NG-CDF for fair distribution of bursaries noting that it has helped keep a lot of students in school.

He further added that through the office, infrastructure in schools improved.
