Kerugoya Boys High School in Kirinyaga Central, Kirinyaga County was indefinitely closed yesterday following a dormitory fire.

In the event that unfolded on Saturday night, the fire is reported to have destroyed all the students’ belongings in the dormitory, leaving 120 learners without a place to sleep.

“We have been told to go home until further notice and our parents have received messages,” said one of the students as they left for home on Sunday.

At the same time, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Alasow, while confirming the incident, stated that the fire began at approximately 6:30 pm while students were in evening preps.

“We are yet to establish the cause of the fire outbreak, we are still investigating,” the county commissioner said.

The County Commissioner struggled to clarify to upset parents who rushed to the school on Saturday night, worried about their children’s safety and seeking explanations about the cause. He reassured everyone that no student had been injured during the incident.

“Nobody was injured. Give us time to investigate; let us not speculate,” the county commissioner said.

During Sunday’s church service at Kerugoya Catholic Church, the school’s sponsor, the Priest in charge, urged parents and the school board to deliberate on the next steps following the destruction of the dormitory.
