Kereri Girls in Kisii County has welcomed Form One students with a clean shave, a move that has sparked controversy among netizens.
In a video shared across social media platforms, the students are seen waiting in line for a barber who shaved their heads clean before they proceed for admission.
A periodic announcement is heard explaining to parents and the incoming learners that it is the culture of the institution that all Form Ones have to be shaved during admission.
“Once again, I welcome you to Kereri Girls, for those girls who are here for the registration process but have long hair, the school`s policy is that you must have your hair shaved. We have barbers at specific locations to take care of that,” the announcement says.
The video elicited mixed reactions from parents with a majority wondering if the act was necessary while some parents praised the idea.
“What has hair got to do with good upbringing? This is just messing with their self esteem,” Mirriam, a social media user said.
Githinji Wa Ruby said, “Another problem with our Kenyan schools, instead of focusing on the mental health and welfare of students, they focus on the physical issues.”
Alvin said, “Land of As. Those complaining shut up and see how As are cultivated.”
