Kisii County Woman Representative’s office partnered with Kereri Girls National School to celebrate Mother Tongue and Other Languages Day in a unique way – by cleaning up the environment.
The event took traders by surprise, as business came to a standstill, and schoolgirls took to the streets with blooms, spades, and water basins to slash, mop, and sweep the streets of Kisii town and neighbouring estates, including Daraja Mbili Market.
The girls, accompanied by teachers, carried placards with messages like “Keep our environment clean”, “Make Kisii town shine”, and “My environment my life”.
They sang patriotic songs as they worked, and were joined by bodaboda riders and mama mboga vendors.

Kisii County Woman Representative Doris Aburi appealed to teachers to form environmental clubs in schools to promote environmental care. “If we know how to take care of our environment through tree planting and garbage collection, we will not be regular hospital visitors,” she said.
Aburi promised her office would partner with schools, hospitals, banks, and the governor’s office to make town cleaning an annual event.
Kereri Girls National School Principal Dr Tabitha Mogonchi and staff were praised for their environmental efforts. The school is partnering with Special Programmes African Chapter (SPAC) to launch an environmental care programme.
SPAC director, Dr Grace Nyandoro, promised to work with the Woman Representative’s office to conserve the environment through sports and games, in collaboration with the Kenya Jump Rope Federation (KJRF).
