Kenyans have been urged to support tree planting in schools they attended to help boost the country’s forest cover.

Principal Secretary in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Juliana Yiapan, said tree planting is a collective responsibility that should not be left to the government alone.

“Tree planting is not just a government initiative — it is a duty for all of us. Each Kenyan has a role to play in restoring our environment,” Yiapan said.

Speaking while leading a tree planting exercise at Ole Sankale School in Narok Central, where she studied, Yiapan highlighted the numerous benefits of forests.

“Forests play a vital role in protecting water sources, preventing soil erosion, and combating climate change. When we plant trees, we secure our future,” she added.

Yiapan also urged school administrations to monitor the growth of seedlings to ensure they thrive, noting that some institutions fail to follow up after planting.

“It’s not enough to just plant trees — we must take care of them to maturity. Schools should lead by example,” she emphasized.

More than 1,000 seedlings were planted at the school during the exercise. The government has set a target to plant 15 billion trees across the country by 2032 as part of efforts to restore degraded landscapes and increase forest cover.

Yiapan further noted that Mazingira Day and related environmental activities serve as a national call to action for every Kenyan to contribute to environmental restoration by planting and nurturing fruit trees.
