The government has announced a new directive to digitise and monetise school games, drama, and music festivals, a move that will require Kenyans to pay to watch student performances at these events.

Speaking during the 97th Kenya Music Festival State Concert at the Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri on Saturday, August 16, 2025, Faith Pino, Directorate of e-citizen services announced that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), is working to stream school events live via the e-Citizen platform.

“Starting next week (18th August, 2025), content from the Kenya Music Festival and Kenya Drama Festival will be accessible online. Each view will cost Ksh200, and the revenue will support the Ministry of Education,” she said.

The initiative will extend beyond the arts, with plans underway to digitise primary and secondary school sports as well. Officials say the move will enhance public access to student talent while creating a new funding stream for education programmes.

The announcement was met with applause at the Sagana event, but it is expected to spark debate over affordability and access. Supporters view the charge as modest and necessary, while critics may argue it could exclude lower-income households from enjoying national school events.
