Kenya Utalii College to be established in Kisumu

Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and Kenya Utalii College CEO Mark Rachuonyo Ogendi sign the deal in the presence of other dignitaries.

The County Government of Kisumu and Kenya Utalii College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the establishment and operation of the institution at the Kanyakwar Cultural Centre in Kisumu West Sub-County.

During the signing ceremony, Kisumu Governor Prof.Anyang’ Nyong’o said that with the establishment of the campus,  locals will benefit from the same training offered at the Kenya Utalii College in Nairobi without having to travel.

“The initiative is part of the county’s commitment to boosting education, creating jobs, and growing the local economy, especially in the tourism and hospitality industries.” he added.

The governor said the deal comes at the right time, given the strategic location of Kisumu within the Western Kenya tourism circuit.

The deal was undertaken together with the College’s Chief Executive Officer Mark Rachuonyo Ogendi and his Chairman David Wamasi.

Part of the  MOU said that Utalii College will refurbish all existing buildings and structures at the centre to meet the standards required for a modern tertiary education institution.

It will also equip infrastructure, utilise management and improve the site and sanitation, operational management and assume any liability and indemnify obligations for any damages.

Kisumu County on its part will provide a premise, facilitate and support the institution to obtain the required permits, licences and approvals from both the county and national  government agencies for the refurbishment and operation of the campus as well as provide security to ensure a secure environment for the campus, it’s staff, students and assets by integrating the Centre into the County patrol framework.

While both have different roles, they will mutually establish a Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) to oversee the execution of the MOU as well as market and promote the College. Additionally, they will hold bi-annual review meetings to assess the progress and impact of the partnership.
