Kenya reaffirms commitment to protect education at safe schools conference

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has reaffirmed government’s commitment to protect education by ensuring that schools remain operational under all circumstances.

CS Ogamba was speaking when he joined the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi for the official opening of the Fifth International Conference on the Safe Schools Declaration on Tuesday.

The Safe Schools Declaration is a global initiative that recognizes the right of every learner to safe, uninterrupted, and accessible education, even in times of conflict or crisis.

“Education is a fundamental right. We must ensure that learners continue their studies safely, even during periods of localized instability,” said CS Ogamba.

He noted that Kenya has implemented measures to maintain school operations, expand psychosocial support for vulnerable communities, and strengthen teacher preparedness in crisis management.

Musalia Mudavadi, who graced the opening, also said that  the government is committed in upholding global education standards, emphasizing the need for collaboration among national and international stakeholders to protect learners and schools from disruption.

CS Ogamba further emphasized the importance of protecting teachers, learners, and education facilities, noting that uninterrupted schooling is critical for the country’s development and the well-being of children.

Kenya’s proactive engagement in the Safe Schools Declaration demonstrates its commitment to global standards and highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in protecting education.

CS Ogamba reaffirmed the government’s resolve to uphold the rights of all learners and ensure that schools remain safe havens for education, even in challenging circumstances.
