Kenya Power distances itself from Endarasha fire incident

Following the tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy which claimed the lives of 21 learners, initial speculations suggested that an electric fault might have been the cause.

However, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has rubbished the claims.

KPLC Regional Manager, Duncan Machuka issued a statement distancing the company from blame, assuring the public that they were actually working with government agencies to determine the cause of the fire.

“Our technical team visited the school after receiving the devastating news to conduct a preliminary analysis,” Machuka said. “As part of our commitment to electrical safety, we immediately switched off the power supply to the school as a precautionary measure.”

Machuka added that the line supplying the school is a low-voltage line from the Mweiga sub-station, and at the time of the fire, there were no reported issues along the supply line.

He further stated that all Kenya Power installations, including the meter, supply cable, earthings, low and high-tension fuses, and the transformer remained intact. The two prepaid meters located within the school’s complex were also unaffected, effectively ruling out an electrical fault as the cause of the fire.

“Based on our preliminary analysis and protection system data, there is no evidence to link the fire to any fault in our network,” Machuka said.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
