Education Cabinet Secretary, (CS) Julius Ogamba has announced that Kenya is set to achieve the international standard of a 1:25 teacher-to-pupil ratio within the next three years.

Speaking on Wednesday at the annual general conference of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) in Mombasa, Ogamba revealed that the current ratio stands at 1:29, a gap the government is actively working to bridge.

“The government is planning to employ all teachers registered by TSC in the next three years to ensure the ratio of a teacher to pupils meets international standards,” stated CS Ogamba.

He highlighted that 76,000 teachers have already been employed on permanent and pensionable terms, with an additional 25,000 interns expected to be recruited this year.

In a key address, the CS also moved to quell concerns regarding the upcoming transition of Grade 9 learners to senior school next year.

“Over the last two days, I have seen a few media reports from this conference seeking government assurances about the state of our preparedness for the transition of our Grade 9 learners to senior school next year. I now wish to assure the public and all stakeholders that the government is fully prepared for the inaugural transition to senior school,” Ogamba affirmed.

He further elaborated on the robust system developed by the Ministry of Education to facilitate this transition.

“Grade 9 candidates are busy utilizing the system to make their senior school choices, which are being informed by the career pathways, gender, nature of school and location, among other factors,” Ogamba explained.

The CS added that the preparation for the Grade 9 national assessment is well underway, with results expected to be released promptly.
