Kenya bags 10 gold medals in East Africa school games

The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association chairman in Kenyenya branch Albert Ombiro has asked teachers to nurture a variety of talents in their schools besides encouraging academic excellence.

He was addressing Kenyan teams from various schools at Sheik Amri Abeid Stadium, Arusha in Tanzania during this year’s 18th edition of the Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSSA).

The chairman, who is also the principal of St Peters Keberesi Secondary School in Kisii County, accompanied his two students Benard Kiptoo and   Betty Chelagat.

Kiptoo won silver in 4 by 400 metres relay and a bronze medal in 400 metres. His school mate Chelagat scooped a silver medal in 5,000 metres race.

Dolphim Omari, who is also a student at the school, won gold medal in 500 metres race in Ivory Coast secondary school sports edition.

Uganda emerged the overall winner with 11 gold medals, 9 silver and 7 bronze medals while Kenya followed closely with 10 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 6 bronze medals.

Rwanda was placed third after garnering a total of 10 medals including 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 6 bronze medals as the host Tanzania emerged fourth with 5 medals.

Other teams that participated included Zanzibar and Malawi, but won no medal.

FEASSSA President Justus Mugisha said the competition was a big success for the East African community. He appealed to the heads of state to put more money towards supporting the annual event that helps to strengthen the economic and social fabric of the involved countries.

The 19th edition of FEASSSA, will be held in Kakamega.

Mugisha appealed to the officials of the hosting country to prepare adequately to make the event a success.
