Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology to be awarded charter this year

Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) which has been set up at Konza Technopolis will receive its charter this year.

Kenya-AIST is designed to be a specialized post-graduate degree-awarding institution with a focus on advanced research, training and education in science, technology and engineering.

It will educate highly skilled scientists and engineers at the Masters and Doctorate levels with theoretical and practical knowledge to foster future industries in Kenya and beyond.

The Institute  which will be Kenya’s first graduates only information technology university will provide Masters and Doctorate level training in Mechanical, Electrical and ICT Engineering, Chemical Civil and Agriculture Engineering /Biotechnology and Basic Science Education this will drive digital transformation in the country.

The construction of the institution started in 2022, after it received KSh9.6 billion credit facility from South Korea with government contributing KSh4.5 billion for its construction.

Acting Principal Prof Jenifer Khamasi said the institution will promote creativity and excellence, and it will support in modernising industrialisation under Vision 2030.

Prof Khamisi who was speaking during the Multisectoral Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation in Nairobi noted that the institution will create social and economic values that will advance quality of education in Kenya.

In five years the institution is expected to churn out a thousand post graduate students, five cohort of Master and two cohorts in PhD.

“KAIST will get talented students, who pass very well with distinctions in universities, it will provide scholarship in first ten years, partner with industries, identify staff that will join to be sponsored,” she said.

During President William Ruto’s visit in South Korea last week, Kenya-AIST and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology signed an MoU to partner in research and training on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The visit also saw Kenya formally join the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) as a Member State.

The Kenya-AIST became the first university to conclude a partnership framework with the IVI. The scope of our partnership covers research and training in vaccine development, public health and preparation of academic programmes. With the partnership, Kenya-AIST has provided an academic home to IVI in Africa.
