KenGen launches Ksh22M food drive in Kajiado County

KenGen Managing Director Eng Peter Njenga launches a truck to distribute food by the initiative to Kajiado schools.

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has launched a Ksh22 million food drive to support school feeding programmes in seven counties, reaffirming its commitment to education and the community’s well-being.

Speaking at Ngong Hills Power Station during the flagging off ceremony of food items to 19 schools in Kajiado County, KenGen Managing Director Eng. Peter Njenga regretted that in some areas where they operate, children lacked food which is a basic need required to ensure they excel in their education.

“We consider the community as genuine partners in delivering our mandate of electricity generation for Kenya. This donation is part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),” he said.

He said that the drive was starting with schools in Kajiado North and West which are within a 10-kilometre radius from the KenGen Ngong Wind Power Station

Ngong Township Primary School Headteacher James Karanja said that the donation will greatly support vulnerable children in the school that has over 2,000 learners who mostly hail from the informal settlements of Mathare and Gichagi.

The campaign targets seven counties with active KenGen Kenya installations namely; Machakos, Embu, Turkana, Nakuru, West Pokot, Kajiado, and Kitui with 136 schools on the radar.

Many children miss out of school due to lack of food leading to pooracademic performance.

According to United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), nearly 2.5 million children had not reported back to school by February 2023 due to hunger.
