KEMU Varsity donates sanitary towels to over 1,000 girls

40 mentors from the Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) Mentorship Club have participated in a Sanitary towel drive where they visited 3 schools and donated Sanitary towels to the young girls within Meru County.
According to Rebecca Wachira, patron of the club, the idea was born in July 2016 when a group of mentors were concerned about the state of need amongst school going girls in regard to limited access to sanitary towels.
This prompted them into action and the university management showed full support and goodwill.
The initiative was tagged “Adopt a Girl Campaign” #adotpagirl. Students and staff jointly made contributions of over Sh90, 000 as well as many boxes of sanitary towels in support of the noble initiative.
The returns of the Sanitary Towel Drive are projected to support 1,050 girls with sanitary towels for 3 months.
The event was flagged off by the Dean of Students at the university main campus in Meru.
The procession then left for Gikumene Primary School.
This later culminated in the handing over of boxes of sanitary towels.
They then headed to Ntakira Day Secondary School and finally to Irinda Day Secondary School for the climax of the event.
The teachers and students expressed gratitude.
The KEMU mentorship patron said with only Sh110 a Kenyan can help keep one girl in school for a month.
In partnership with the Jielimishe Girl Education Challenge Project, a project funded by UKAID the items were supplied to the selected schools that are mostly affected by the trends of girls missing school because of the natural process.
Mercy Makena the head teacher from Gikumene Primary School appreciated the move by the KEMU students.
The head teacher said this will ensure that the girls do not miss classes.
