The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) has launched the training of West Pokot school Board of Managements (BoMs) in a bid to strengthen school governance and advancement of educational leadership in the county.

The vigorous training for both Heads of Institutions and Board members across the county, also aims at enhancing accountability, and professionalizing leadership within learning institutions.

Speaking after opening the training session, the County Director of Education Yophes Magara emphasized that effective governance is not an optional extra in education; it is the backbone upon which quality learning, institutional stability, and sustainable growth depend.

According the organisers, the programme is being conducted concurrently across eight strategic centres to ensure accessibility and efficiency. These centres include Ortum Girls’ Boarding, Chelombai Girls’ Boarding, Sigor Primary and Junior School, Konyau Alale Primary and Junior School, Kabichbich, Nasokol Girls, Sook Boys, and Holy Cross Kacheliba.

At its core, the training seeks to empower Boards of Management with practical knowledge and skills necessary to steer institutions effectively.

Participants in the training will be tipped on key areas such as corporate governance principles, financial management and oversight, legal frameworks guiding educational institutions, conflict resolution, risk management, strategic planning, and ethical leadership. These components are essential in fostering institutions that are transparent, learner-centred, and performance-driven.

In recent years, the education sector has experienced significant reforms, curriculum shifts, and policy adjustments. With the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE), the integration of Junior Secondary Schools, and evolving financial accountability frameworks, school leadership has become increasingly complex. Heads of Institutions and Board members must therefore operate with clarity, compliance, and confidence. This KEMI-led initiative is timely and necessary.
