The Kenya Junior School Teachers Association (KEJUSTA) has reiterated its commitment to championing the autonomy of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and the confirmation of teachers currently serving under the internship programme.
In a statement signed by National Chairperson Okil Okil, the association emphasized that the push for JSS autonomy remains central to protecting the rights and welfare of both teachers and learners.
KEJUSTA stated that the autonomy cause represents the genuine interests of educators working under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) structure.
“We cannot pause or abandon the push for the autonomy of Junior Secondary Schools, as this cause carries the genuine interests of both teachers and learners,” the statement read in part.
The association also condemned the continued use of the internship programme, noting that courts have already declared it illegal.
KEJUSTA said the arrangement has subjected teachers to unnecessary economic hardship and prolonged uncertainty.

“Equally, we cannot forgo the fight for the confirmation of serving intern teachers. The internship programme has already been declared illegal by the courts and continues to expose our colleagues to economic hardship and uncertainty,” Okil stated.
The teachers’ lobby appealed to all JSS educators to remain united and speak with one voice as they push for dignity, fairness, and professional recognition.
KEJUSTA urged teachers not to allow divisions to arise between interns and those on permanent terms, insisting that all educators share a common vision.
“In the end, we are all JSS teachers — bound by a common purpose and driven by the shared vision of securing dignity, fairness, and autonomy in our profession,” the statement said.
The association has been at the forefront of engaging the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Ministry of Education to ensure that JSS structures are granted full administrative independence and that all teachers receive fair employment terms.
