Youth in Jilore Ward, Malindi sub-county, Kilifi county, who have completed the KCSE, have been urged to join Vocational and Training Centres (VTCS) in large numbers to acquire various basic technical skills in different fields.

Speaking to Education News at Baolala shopping centre recently, Jilore Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) in Kilifi County, Mr. Hamis Jambo, said that Youths who join Vocational and Training Centres in the county actually gain self-employment skills, as their expertise and manpower are needed in all sectors of the economy and market, respectively.

He further challenged those Youths who were refusing to join the Vocational and Training Centres, as they were avoiding avenues where self-employment opportunities were created.

The MCA, however, stated that Youths who join Vocational and Training Centres receive a bursary of shillings 15,000 each per year from the county government.

He further stated that there is no reason for the Youth to fail to join the Vocational and Training Centres, as the county government is giving them bursaries to enable them to pursue technical education.

The MCA, however, urged parents in the area to develop a positive attitude towards Vocational and Training Centres, since they play a crucial role in society.

However, Jambo asked parents in the area to encourage their children who completed Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education to join Vocational and Training Centres near them in large numbers to acquire the necessary basic technical skills for their future self employment, instead of leaving them to loiter in the streets of urban centres in the county for no apparent reason at all.

“Vocational and Training Centres play a vital role in the country in preparing the youth for future self-employment”, he noted.

He further asked all education stakeholders in the county to work as a team to make Vocational and Training Centre programmes a success.
