Katira secondary students demonstrate to decry lack of food, harassment from teachers

SCHOOL DEMOSTRATIONS
Learning was disrupted on Tuesday at Katira mixed secondary school in Nambale sub-county, Busia County after students in the school staged a demonstration to complain over poor diet.
The over five hundred learners also complained of harassment from some teachers.
“There are some teachers who are fond of abusing us over small mistakes. Caning has become a normal thing in the school. The school diet is poor despite our parents paying for food programs.”
Some of the students walked for over 27 kilometers from the school to Nambale sub-county headquarters to present their grievances to the sub-county education director Sarah Ayumba, although they didn’t find her in office.
The director, later on, visited the school and talked to the students.
She however refused to talk to the media, referring journalists to the County Education Director in Busia town for comments.
The school principal Andrew Scalins Mutanda was also not available for comment as he was not in school, with calls to his phone going unanswered.
