Three students from Kathiani High School in Machakos have constructed a drone that will ease spraying of agrochemicals on farms.
The project saw the Form 2 students – Gordon Onyango, Kelvin Kasyula and Simon Kilonzo – taking position six in the Science Congress two months ago in Nairobi.
Speaking to Education News after presenting their project to area Member of Parliament (MP) Robert Mbui, they explained that they sourced for materials from the school compound to make the drone.
“We used a transmitter, receiver, four motors and propellers, and lithium batteries among other materials. Some of our materials are from toy cars as we were not allowed to source materials from outside the school,” said Kasyula.
According to the trio, the drone can be controlled using a remote to ensure efficiency, and will save time and reduce manpower costs.
“The equipment can be controlled easily because it doesn’t require much training and it also saves money compared to using a plane,” said Onyango.
“Most people use the old manual technique which puts the person spraying at risk of inhaling the chemicals being sprayed. The traditional method is also tiring and time-consuming.” Kilonzo noted.
