Karatina University has announced the resumption of learning for the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year, barely a day after lecturers called off their six-week strike following a deal with the government.

In an internal memo dated November 6, 2025, Academic Registrar Dr. Wangari Gathuthi informed students that normal teaching and learning activities would resume on Monday, November 10, in accordance with the updated academic timetable now available on the Student Portal and University Website.

According to Dr. Gathuthi, the University Senate held a special meeting on November 6 and resolved to adjust the academic calendar to cater for the seven-week disruption caused by the industrial action.

Dr Gathuthi added that the student elections, which had been postponed following the suspension of learning on November 3, will now take place from November 10 as per the details circulated by the Dean of Students.

“The University Senate, management, and the Vice-Chancellor continue to appreciate all students for their cooperation and understanding in addressing the challenges encountered so far. Students are encouraged to seek clarification through official communication channels,” the Academic Registrar stated.

The notice further urged students to travel back to their respective stations of residence as soon as possible and complete their semester registration in line with university policies and guidelines.

Karatina University had earlier suspended classes on November 3, directing students to vacate the institution’s premises by that afternoon after weeks of disrupted learning. The move came amid a nationwide lecturers’ strike led by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), which had brought teaching in public universities to a halt.

The lecturers’ strike ended this week after UASU reached an agreement with the government over the implementation of the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and other salary-related issues.

With the industrial action now resolved, the university’s management has expressed optimism that normal academic operations will resume smoothly on Monday, allowing the institution to recover lost time and conclude the semester within the planned academic year
