A Karatina University ICT student is recuperating at Karatina Sub County Hospital after being shot by the police during the recent anti-government protests by the youth (Gen Z) held countrywide dubbed ‘#RejectFinanceBill’.

According to the father, Patrick Maina Mukunya, 21-year old Maxwell Maina was shot on his right ankle while alighting from a matatu after the demonstration in the town.

“Good Samaritans came to his aid and took him to Karatina Sub County Hospital where he has been bedridden until now,” he said.

Speaking to Education News on phone, the father who is a Chemistry tutor in Garissa, called for speedy investigations by IPOA.

“I also call upon the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and the IG of Police to expedite the investigation to ensure perpetrators are brought to book,” he said.

Mukunya condemned the brutal attacks on unarmed civilians during the protests and called for the prosecution of rogue policemen.

Though his son is one of the many youth who bore the brunt of police brutality, the tutor said that there was need to strengthen police and civilian relationships to ensure the safety of residents.
