Kaplong Girls closed after students protest over male teacher’s sexual harassment allegations

Shattered windows on classrooms and the school bus tell the story of unrest that led to Kaplong Girls High School’s closure.

Kaplong Girls High School in Bomet County has been closed indefinitely this morning following a student-led protest sparked by serious allegations of sexual harassment involving a male teacher.

The students staged a peaceful but firm protest within the school compound, demanding immediate action and accountability..

The school principal, Clara Mitei, stated that the decision was made to protect learners and allow for investigations.

Alliance Girls High School—a prestigious national girls’ boarding school in Kiambu County, founded in 1948, became embroiled in a grave scandal following alarming claims of sexual harassment by a male teacher.

Police were deployed when former students staged a protest outside the school gate, chanting “Protect the Girls, not the Predators”, and demanding the teacher’s immediate suspension and arrest.

Also, a popular online petition launched in early July called for the removal of  Peter Ayiro, a Christian Union teacher implicated in past misconduct, alleging systemic protection of perpetrators by the school’s administration and support structures.

This episode served as a stark reminder that no institution, however elite, is immune to abuse of power, and that student voices must always be heard and acted upon swiftly.
