The newly constituted Murang’a County Government has set aside Ksh10 million to assist needy students admitted to pursue degree programmes at various universities with tuition fees.

According to new Governor Irungu Kang’ata , the scholarship programme seeks to benefit students who passed Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and studied at local day secondary schools.

Kang’ata explained that the financial facility is designed to motivate students enrolled at the county’s day mixed secondary schools which largely lack adequate infrastructures fore effective learning.

He noted that majority of children in the county study in day secondary schools compared to boarding institutions.

Kang’ata said learners in these day schools learn under difficult circumstances, where critical facilities like laboratories, libraries, adequate books, teachers and related resources are not fully available.

The governor disclosed that his government will continue to support students in these institutions to pass national examinations   and pursue higher education.

He said his government will select 1,000 students who are admitted to universities, this year to benefit from the initial resources from the kitty.

The scholarship will be recruiting best performing students annually and support their university education.

Kang’ata observed majority of learners in day schools are from humble backgrounds   and a bursary fund will be valuable to the promotion of education in the county.

Further, the county boss explained that Nyota Zetu Bursary scheme initiated by the outgoing regime will continue to be supported by his government.

He said the scheme which supports needy children in secondary schools will be streamlined to benefit the target students.

Kang’ata assured those in the bursary scheme that his government takes education of the youth seriously and will support programmes to bolster opportunities in the sector.
