A top swimming sensation from Kanga High School is the only qualifier in the sport from Migori County for the Term One National School Games.

Master Skyler Martin beat five other swimmers to emerge top at the sub-county level during the regional swimming competition held at the Aga Khan Complex in Kisumu.

He is now among other swimmers from the Nyanza region who will participate in the Term One Games in Mombasa from April 5 to 13.

Kanga High School Chief Principal Reuben Kodiango lauded the top swimmer, noting that Martin has come very far in the sport, which is rare in that part of the world.

Kodiango said Martin has much potential and can go far in the sport. “I believe the boy has what it takes to proceed to another level,” he said.

Kodiango also promised to support Martin fully as he lifts the school’s name.

He described Skyler as “a brand in the making and a great star emerging in the world of swimming.”

The Chief Principal encouraged other students to take swimming seriously as a profession, which aligns with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

His coach, Benson Jalango, expressed gratitude for Martin’s performance.

Jalango said Martin is a reserved but equally disciplined swimmer. He added that swimming aligns well with the CBC.

Martin’s father, Nicanor Akech, a former soccer international and UEFA B license holder trained in the Netherlands, said Martin is his only son and studied at Aga Khan Primary School, Kisumu.

Akech described Martin as sharp in class, having served as the Head of the Mathematics Department in his class, and noted that he is very disciplined and polite.

He also mentioned that Martin’s younger sister, Korbel Albright, plays violin.

Martin expressed his joy at the achievement and hopes to reach the regional level.

He shared that he began swimming in Class Six while at Aga Khan Primary School, adding that the sport hypes him up and is enjoyable.

Martin says he wants to pursue swimming as a sub-career in addition to his other ambitions and dreams of going beyond East Africa.
